Artist Statement
It's late, past midnight. You’re alone and the world has gone quiet, you’re left with nothing but your thoughts. The deafening silence of the room presses against your ears. With nothing else to stimulate your mind, your thoughts begin to wash over you like tidal waves. Memories, experiences, emotions, your past, your present, a pensive sadness of no particular cause. Melancholy. It all begins to overwhelm you, but in a weird beautiful way, it relaxes you too. You come back to reality, have you gained anything? Maybe some insight into the intricacies of yourself, maybe it all became a little more clear, or maybe you’ve gotten yourself a little down. Whatever it is, onwards you go, moving through life with a slightly different perspective.
Alex’s current practice is based around this state of being, and the things that come to mind when left alone with his thoughts. His work aims to engage the viewer in a similar experience, where they can lose themselves in the paintings and ponder. Immersive and visually stimulating, his colourful abstract paintings keep the observer's eye busy, while prompting the mind to wander wherever it may go.
